SIM lock:

A SIM-LOCK, network lock, carrier lock, IMEI-Lock or (MASTER) subsidy lock is a technical limitation built into GSM and CDMA cellular phones by producers to be used by providers to limit using these phones to a particular locations and/or networks. This is in contrast to a mobile phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that doesn't impose any SIM restrictions.

Unlocking Technology:

Usually, a locked smartphone will display a message if a restricted SIM is used, requesting the unlock code. On the latest phone models working on Android os software, the mobile phone should display a message saying “SIM network unlock PIN” or “Enter Network Lock Control Key” if it is network locked. Windows phones should show the message, “This SIM card can only be used on specific networks. Contact your customer service center for the unlock code”. Several other handsets may well show a variety of messages including "Enter special code" or "Enter unlocking code," or in some circumstances the handset will simply show a message saying that it is locked. When a valid code is typed in, the mobile will display "Network unlocked” or “Network unlock successful”.

Economics:

Quite often a SIM-locked mobile is available at a substantially reduced price than an unlocked one on the grounds that the company expects income through its service. SIM locks are used on less expensive (pay-as-you-go) handsets, though bargains on costlier handsets demand a subscription that delivers guaranteed income. Unlocked mobiles have a better market value.

Unlocking Services:

A lot of businesses offer a network phone unlocking service . This service requires all those that would like to unlock a handset to give their IMEI number to a unlocking company and in most cases they will also need the country and cellular network the device is locked to, sometimes sent by email or submitted on their web-site. The company will then supply (in return for a fee) the unlock code for the mobile.

Unlocking Service Providers:

Disappointingly there are a multitude of fraudulent companies working in the cellphone network unlocking industry. As a result it is prudent to make sure you locate a honest supplier for these services. Take the necessary precautions and investigate every potential retailers prior to committing to submitting an order. In the case of on-line providers, make sure they list their registered business name and corresponding registration information (all authentic company must be legally registered with all the official governing bodies for their country of origin) and ensure they provide a genuine registered address and contact details on their website. Additionally make certain that any payments made are via legitimate methods as in a recognised bank or financial institution using a debt or credit card, but do not ever make payment via a direct transfer as this offers no fiancial safety.
