When I first met the team who are creating Deepworld, an 2D Sandbox-style building game that is similar to Minecraft at GDC in March, I advised them that the project would be much bigger than they thought. Although they have extensive experience in the development of software and servers running a massive game like Deepworld will require a significant investment. It appears that they agree. SKINS has spawned an Kickstarter project to raise some early funds for servers and development.

The group is offering a variety of prizes to their supporters which include your own servers and worlds, as well as art books and other items. You can also consider buying your own items including names, or pictures to play the game. The goal is to raise $20,000 all in all and as of this writing, the guys have raised about $4,000. They say they want to take the project full-time, and this money will enable them to do that.

I wish them the best. Deepworld looks great, and as I said when I first saw it I believe that the Mac (and iOS) would benefit from a game that's like this.
